Swimming fans are set for some exciting times this August as the world’s best junior swimmers are set to descend in Singapore as part of the FINA 5th World Junior Championships. The competition, a global event, will take place in Singapore from 25th to 30th August 2015 and will see over 1000 participants from more than 100 countries.
The unveiling of the championship was organised this week at a press conference at Kallang Wave, which also saw a meet and greet for fans, with multiple medal winner Joseph Schooling. Members of the media, dignitaries from the Singapore Swimming Association, sponsors and a large crowd of close to 500 people all wanted to get a glimpse of Joseph Schooling.
Mr Lee Kok Choy, President of the Singapore Swimming Association (SSA), was first to address the media and crowd present and he was clearly delighted and ready for the challenge. He said: “This is the first time these championships are held in Asia, and we are ready to welcome the swimmers, officials and families from all 100 countries. These championships are where future world champions and Olympians make an entrance to the world stage, and you have a chance to meet them here in Singapore.”
As a part of the announcement, the SSA also unveiled Schooling as the ambassador for the Championships. The multiple SEA Games medal winner, who was celebrating his 20th birthday, said: “The FINA World Junior Championship is an amazing competition and it’s an honour to be the ambassador. I was fortunate enough to swim in the Junior Championships in Peru in 2011, and that memory will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
The FINA World Junior Championship will take place at the OCBC Aquatic Centre, tickets are already on sale and can be found at www.sportshub.com.sg under the ‘Sports Hub Tix’ tab.
