World Number One Novak Djokovic has been unveiled as one of the Singapore Slammers for this year’s International Premier Tennis League(IPTL).
The Serbian is joined by Swiss sensation Belinda Bencic, Czech star Karolina Pliskova, Australian Nick Kyrgios, former world number one Carlos Moya, and Brazilian doubles specialist Marcelo Melo.
This is an all new team for the Singapore Slammers, with the exception of Kyrgios, who represented the Republic at last year’s IPTL.
The tournament in December will see Singapore host the final on 20th December to determine the winner of the League.
The Slammers will go up against the likes of the Japan Warriors, led by Kei Nishikori, The Indian Aces featuring Rafael Nadal and the UAE Royals with Roger Federer.
The League will start on 2nd December in Japan, which is a new addition to the tour, move to the Philippines, India and Dubai, before culminating in Singapore.
IPTL sets itself apart from other tournaments
Although it is a tennis event featuring world renown stars, the IPTL isn’t quite like the stern and serious Grand Slams that take place throughout the year.
Instead, the event breaks the traditional etiquette of the sport, and retains a party atmosphere, where players and spectators can cut loose and have a bit of fun.
Players are often seen running over to their teammates and giving high fives, dancing, and generally having a ball.
IPTL Managing Director Mahesh Bhupathi, who is also a professional doubles player, said the event has a team concept.
“In team concept there’s no ‘Quiet Please”, you’re playing for your teammates, it’s men, women, legends, there’s a lot going on.”
